NEWLY FORMED ZINE

Role: Publication Design
Created at: Rhode Island School of Design, Newly Formed (Spring 2020)

During the Spring semester of 2020, I took the course Newly Formed taught by Christopher and Kathleen Sleboda. This zine was one of the projects made during the course.

PROMPT

Find forms in the RISD Library that can be sequenced into a book. Photocopy/photograph pages from a variety of different books and magazines. Each image/spread will be connected by a match cut to the following image/spread. The forms should change and evolve as the book progresses.

You must show the surrounding page from each “match” and embrace the photocopy/ scan/photo artifacts. Do not crop to image only.

48 images (black and white)
Booklet trim size: any

EXPLANATION

This project was part of a larger exploration of the relationship between visuals and audio. This research-based zine helped me to form connections between the two worlds. I used curiosity as a way to create a restriction for myself while creating this zine.

By utilizing the library’s vast collection of publications, I was able to gain a better understanding of how audio was portrayed visually in various time periods across different medias. I found images, diagrams, artworks and objects that I then scanned and arranged to relate from one page to the next creating an ever-evolving zine that creates a clear path between different media.
